I've been having an itch to draw some superheroes. After I sketched the first idea for the Hulk with ice cream, I found online a few more cartoony Hulks eating ice cream and I realized I'm not that clever. Oh well. These are ink and digital color. This is Amanda Seyfried for Caricaturama. It's really hard to draw her without making it look like a super basic cartoon girl. But I guess she looks like a cartoon anyway.

This one is for me. Not really happy with the Nic Cage likeness, and I sorta messed up inking the hair and in the end I accidentally made it black. One of the things I was happy with was how the silver of car ended up.

This is the final version, based on the above sketch. Watercolor with a digital background that I had put in because I liked it in that first sketch.

Years ago I tried to work for this guy. I interviewed with him and he even had me work for a day in his studio with his artists, just to see how I worked out. I was super excited because I thought I was on my way out of theme park caricatures and moving up. During that trial day I thought I had done pretty well and made a good impression and all that. After the work day ended I looked for this guy to talk about what he thought about actually hiring me, but he was nowhere to be found. So reluctantly I left and called him the next day, then the next, and for about a week without an answer or a call back. Now I could understand not being hired, but I was upset over him just never taking my calls and just never speaking to me again. That's no way to get rejected for a job.

Yesterday a friend of mine sent me a link to a story on Cartoon Brew on this guy. After reading the comments on the Orlando Sentinel article, I realize what a bullet I had dodged. I hope all those artists I worked with, and that were so helpful to me on that one day, are working and doing well today. It's tough out there.

I went with a group to this great place called the Audubon where my friend Maria volunteers. Its a shelter for birds of prey.

There is always a special challenge when drawing animals live. It is difficult because most of the time the animal wont stay still, but I find i come out with more interesting sketches for that very same reason. The ones down below were drawn with pen on 3x11 paper. It's something I saw Steve Silver do years ago at a caricature convention, and I always liked the idea. You can click on 'em for larger views.

So I know I haven't updated this blog in a long while. The reason for that is that I haven't really drawn much this summer. As most of you know, I draw caricatures at a theme park for a living, and this summer certain changes were made at work that made things very difficult. As a result I've ended every day completely exhausted and with absolutely nothing left to give. This post shows the few sketches that I've drawn in the past 2 months. So yeah, not much of a post considering how long since my last one. But the good news is, summer has been slowing down (good news for this blog, but not my wallet), and I'm getting my energy back and starting to get my groove back. Most of my energy has been going to getting Code 11 regularly updated again, but I think soon I will have plenty of content for both blogs. Code 11 is going to have some major changes in the future, but I wont say anything on that just yet. So don't give up on me yet! I will have more for you here soon! Thanks!

Electric Mini Cooper

Here is one I did for fun of Mini's new electric car. There are quite a few alternative fuel vehicles being developed these days, but I really believe the electric car the future. I think we need to learn to let go of the antiquated internal combustion engine. The electric car is still in its infancy, but once it gets popular enough to be profitable we will see great advances in battery technology, which will drive down the cost as well as increase efficiency and reliability.

The great thing I'm seeing now is sporty electric cars, which I'm very happy about. The only way I could give up my SVT would be for something like this Mini E. It's my dream that my next auto purchase will be electric powered.

Check out this video from Jay Leno's garage. He has a great website full of videos of his personal car collection as well as new cars, which he gives good reviews and opinions. He is very interested in electric cars and he's got plenty of videos on those too.

So a few weeks ago I went with a few friends from work to Seminole Community College for some chalk art thing. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I had to go cuz I promised my friend Megan I would go, and she wouldn't let me back out. She's kinda scary when she's angry.

Dr. Sketchy

Dr. Sketchy is something I only recently found out about. Once a month here in Orlando, they hold a figure drawing session in a small tea shop. Many cities have Dr Sketchy, so look it up, you might have one near you.

These were from the first session I went to in March. One model, two different costumes. All brush pen and pencil.

These were from last week. These models were not nearly as good as the previous one. Very boring un-dynamic poses, but I was still fairly happy with the outcome. I was better prepared this time as far as drawing materials. Black and gray brush pens above, brush pen and colored pencil on red paper below.

I redid the color on this one. I was never happy with the color job on the other one, but I wasn't sure why. A friend pointed out to me that the black and white version was much more effective than the first color job, so I tried again using only flat muted colors. I do like it better than the other color version, but still not quite as much as the non-color version. Either way I think I will leave it alone and move on.

I want to introduce you to the artwork of my little cousin Nathan. When I was told he likes to draw, my reaction was something like "Oh, that's nice. Good for him." I really didn't give it much of a second thought, since all kids like to draw. Once I actually got to see what he was making, I was floored. He has stacks of notebooks filled with an entire universe of tiny characters. At first glance it looks like pages full of sheer chaos, but with closer inspection, there is a definite method to his madness. I'm pretty sure he doesn't draw them, he just opens the book and shakes his head, and every idea he's had all day just falls onto the page.

In a way, he makes me jealous. Reading his comics, I get the impression he's not TRYING to accomplish something, he's just accomplishing it. I am very proud of him, and I have no doubt that, in time, his work will gain a lot of attention. He has a new blog for his work at thex-17.blogspot.com. Here is my attempt on that terminator girl from that Terminator show. I inked it, scanned it, then colored it in Prismacolor markers, then scanned it again. I am happy with the inking job (something I've been working to improve), but I think the color marker job ruins it. I worked and worked on the likeness, but I still didn't get it at all. I still like the drawing enough to post it though.

I noticed today that big jerk Tom Richmond is trying to make me look bad by posting a better likeness of this same girl AND posting it before I posted mine. I think he's out to get me.

I know I haven't posted anything artwork up in a looong time and I haven't done any Code 11 in a looong time. I have been super lazy and that's not really a good excuse but its true. As a result I haven't drawn anything worth looking at in a while. I HAVE been bringing my Nintendo DS everywhere though and learning stuff about the colors around me. Here's some DS sketches. This thing is really nice to have. These are about 10-20 minutes each.

So I will get out of my self-induced rut and make better stuff to look at. Apologies to Aaron Philby, who is the guy that reads Code 11.

Nintendo DS

I just got a Nindendo DS and loaded the Colors! program on it. It's a lot of fun to sketch on and a really nice tool to carry around. I just got the hardware today to load the program and did this little sketch from a picture in a magazine.

I'm still figuring out all the in's and out's of loading up your pictures. There's a way to get playback video's of your sketches, but I haven't figured that out yet.

Charger SRT-8

So a friend of mine bought this awesome car you see here and asked if I could draw a caricature of it for him. I don't know how I haven't drawn this car before. That SRT division does a pretty good job, I think. So I started working on this a while ago and ended up spending way too long on it. I probably spent more time on crappy sketches than I did on the final product. But I finally finished everything this weekend. Thats my official excuse for being late on the newest Code 11 installment. But I will have one up in a day or two, I promise.

Anyway here's what the car looks like.

Here are some of the sketches I did, trying to work out in my head what the car should look like.

I had an idea of what I wanted the final to look like.

Here I have most of the details worked out for the final. Getting to this point from that other sketch took me a while. Getting it to look like a Charger instead of a generic box on wheels was tough.

A lot of the time when drawing cars, I find a cool photo I like, and just draw from that . This one was an idea I had, so getting everything right was a bit more difficult. I googled lots of pictures and videos of drift races as reference.

Here is the final product using ink and watercolor on arches.

Ater I was done I was still thinking about one of the small sketches I had done in the beginning (you can see it above) and I wanted to see that one done too. Plus, even though the first one had the action I wanted, it wasn't showing off the rims. This one went a lot quicker for me because it was drawn more directly from a photo reference than the first one.

When my friend told me he was bringing his car to a car show this weekend and displaying my artwork with his car, I threw this together to have some postcards printed up. I would love to draw people's awesome cars all the time.

Unfortunately my website is down. I am trying to fix the problem (in the form of trying to get Uplinkearth to answer emails or calls) and I will keep you updated. Since I'm kind of stuck there, right now I'm creating a temporary site so I will at least have something up, till I can get everything worked out.

Update: So my new domain is KenKnafouArt.com. I'm still working on getting KenKnafou.com back, but it looks like its gonna be a while. It wasn't a big deal changing my links everywhere, but I don't know if I should bother getting new cards made now.

First of all I'm sorry for the lack of posts here. I hit an artistic rut for a while. In an effort to get out of said rut, I started working on my comic strip. I don't really have any reason for these. They all look very different from each other, so I suppose thats interesting.

This is a sketch done just like others in previous posts, where I draw someone i see and the scan the sketch and then Photoshop it using the lasso and paint bucket tools. I don't really do many of those anymore.

I've been toying with the idea of doing a little comic strip about me at work, just for the fun of it. I did this today to try and see what it would look like on a blog. I've never been good at writing, so I've had a really hard time writing my work experiences that would be readable normal (non-artist) people. Part of why I want to do it is the good practice. Flexing some unused art muscles, such as visual storytelling, drawing emotion, cartooning emotion, inking, and minimalism. And writing I suppose.

This is a Woody Harrelson sketch done in pencil, and then Photoshopped a bit for fun. I think he's a really scary looking guy.

I'm not exactly done with it, but I've kind of hit a wall. I might set it aside and look at it with fresh eye's later on. The coloring is very much inspired by Cheeks.

Update: I changed the colors a little and tweaked some other stuff. i guess i'm done.

Wow I know its been a loong time. Its no excuse, but for a while I had been distracting myself away from drawing with a few home improvement projects that I had been putting off. I tiled my kitchen, which i'm pretty proud of, thankyouverymuch! I've never really tiled before, so it was kinda rough starting, but I think it came out pretty good. Stuff like that is more in my father's realm, but I try to learn what I can from him. Every once in a while its really satisfying to just work with my hands and build something or fix something.

Then working spring break at a theme park is kind of artistically draining, so after those long hours, the last thing I want to do is draw. Also lately I've had some personal family issues come up. But I promise that I'm back and I'm starting to draw again, and it feels good. Unfortunately I don't have much to show except some pretty rough sketches. Tho all my sketches are pretty rough I guess. Some of it is working out ideas for a more finished project I've been doing just for fun that I'm almost done with. I'll post that up soon for you to see. Thanks for being patient with me (if anyone still checks this thing, that is).

Knight Rider was THE show to watch as a kid, in my opinion. Look for more of this soon!

I haven't posted anything up in a while. To my shame, I haven't really drawn anything worthwhile in a long time. Bad habits and all. But recently I went to a figure drawing session that my friend and boss, Dino Casterline put together. These are some of the results. These are done on cheap old 8 x 10 printer paper with a semi-dry Dixon Markette and a ballpoint pen. I've enjoyed the blog of Dan Hay so much that I decided I wanted to do the same thing he does. He finds one person every day that looks interesting, and keeps a mental image of that person, and later on tries to make an interesting design out of it. He pointed out to me that its a good way of exercising the brain by always thinking about drawing. I could use a bit of that. I dont know if I'll post a new one every day like Dan, but I would like to try and draw one every day.

These are done with a ball point pen and Prismacolor markers with a little bit of art stix in there for good measure.

Something new

I did these today. Just trying something new. Micheal Jackson was done for Diluc's website. It was a scan of some line work and colored in photoshop. The second one was done from a photo my friend Dan took while on vacation. It was done in photoshop using only the lasso and paint bucket tools. Both are kind of a departure, just trying some new things I guess. Enjoy!

Strange Sight

So here's something interesting. The other day I'm driving down this long road, on my way to a Christmas party I'm drawing for. As I'm driving I happen upon something I never thought in my wildest dreams I would ever see. I couldn't tell what it was from far away, but as I get closer I just can't believe what's in front of me: there is a real camel sitting in an old brightly colored school bus! So as I'm driving behind it and at the same time I'm fumbling to find my camera, because I know that later on I'll just think I imagined the whole thing. So here is the proof for the world to see. Photoshop landscapes

I was inspired by a post on Marco Bucci's blog and Xiangyuan Jie. So I used some photos from my trip to Los Angeles a few months ago, and tried to do some small photoshop sketches. I tried really hard to NOT use the eyedropper tool, but I did end up using it quite a bit. I spent about 20 minutes on each one. I've never really just tried to do any landscape stuff just for the sake of the landscape before. Honestly I barely put any backgrounds in anything I do, which is not a good thing. I would really like to get a better grasp of light and color as well. Plus I live in friggin Florida and this place has plenty of great landscapes to paint, so I guess I don't have any excuses. Enjoy!

Portrait

Here is a portrait I attempted of my late grandmother. I still have a lot to learn about painting and portraits. I feel on this one I started out pretty good and kind of got lost as I went along. But I learned a few things along the way. This one was done in acrylic on canvas. If you want to see some really inspiring acrylic work, check out my link to Kruger's blog on the right. I spent a lot of time looking at that for motivation. I have a long way to go, but I'm enjoying the process.

Convention Caricatures

I love this one because it was done during the speed competition. It probably was drawn in all of about 5 to 10 seconds and you can still tell its me!

I think this one really captures my personality.

This one is by the talented Sam Gorrie. I must confess I really wanted her to draw me this year. This one was drawn on a tiny one inch button you can wear.

I dare anyone to stare at this one and NOT get creeped out.

This one is one of my favorites. Jeremy Townsend is one of the few caricature artists who's drawings make me laugh until my sides hurt.

Here are some caricatures I got from the NCN Convention. This was the first caricature convention I went to that wasn't in Orlando (all the way in Reno, in fact) and I had a great time. I have a bunch of pictures of my artwork and work from my favorite artists and I promise to post those soon.
